If there is a wine that loves oak and wants as much as you can give, it’s Durif. Also knows as Petite Sirah, this wine shows how oak aging can take an excellent wine and turn it into a superb one. Blackberry, dark sweet cherry, eucalyptus and licorice flavors combine to keep your interest on the fruit side. Then, oak contributions of vanilla, cedar, bacon and brown sugar provide the finish. This fruit and savory combination pushes the aromas to new heights. If you linger long, perhaps you will find aromas of leather, flint, chocolate or red fruit. But, as with Sirens of Homer’s Odyssey, you will not be able to pull your nose out of this glass. Not to worry though, these Sirens will only lead you to the next glass.
